October on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the best kind of slow. The road curls along the ridgeline, the speed limit stays low, and every few miles there is another overlook asking you to pull over. Meadows of Dan sits right off the Parkway, so we see a lot of road trippers come through, and we see what they wish they had packed.
Plan for no signal
Long stretches of the Parkway have weak or no cell service. Download your maps before you leave, write down the address of where you are staying, and keep a paper list of emergency numbers in the glove box. It feels old fashioned until the bars disappear.
The trunk basics
A proper kit beats a pile of loose tools. The Everlit car emergency kit keeps jumper cables, a tow strap and first aid in one zipped bag. Add a cordless tire inflator: temperatures swing on the mountain and tire pressure drops with them, so a quick top-up at the trailhead is worth it.
Comfort for the overlooks
- Sunglasses for low autumn sun that sits right at windshield height.
- A second pair of light shoes for short walks from the parking area.
- A small trash bag, because there are few bins at the pull-offs.
- Water and a snack for each person, even on a short drive.
Our aviator sunglasses are cheap enough to keep one pair in each car. Slip-on barefoot shoes pack flat and are easy on and off when you hop out for a view.
Clean up before the drive home
Leaves, dust and dog hair follow you back into the car. A cordless mini car vacuum makes the last stop a two-minute job instead of a weekend chore.
Drive slowly, give cyclists room, and stop often. The Parkway was built for the view, and the view is better when you are not in a hurry.
